BREAKING NEWS - "Road rage, assault, high speed chase incident ends in Tremonton"

TREMONTON – By Cari Doutre – Feb. 19, 2020

What started out as an alleged road rage incident on I-15 on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2020, ended with a high-speed chase, assault, attempted car theft and an innocent bystander with a shotgun.

At approximately 5:15 a.m. that morning, Box Elder County Communications Center received a call about an alleged road rage incident on I-15 near Perry. Deputies with the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Department were able to locate the suspect in the Honeyville/Elwood on I-15 but the suspect did not comply with deputies’ attempts to stop and kept driving. Speeds reached 100 mph before deputies pulled back.

“Deputies terminated the attempt to stop as per Sheriff policy,” it stated in a press release released by Chief Deputy Dale Ward with the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Department.

Soon after at about 5:40 a.m., a call came in to from an individual in Elwood stating that a “young male was attempting to steal a vehicle and had assaulted a man at the residence. The suspect demanded the keys to the car. The resident complied by going into the home but came back with his shotgun,” the statement added.

According to the report, the suspect then fled the scene on foot as his vehicle was “disabled in front of the house.”

The report didn’t clarify if the vehicle the suspect was driving broke down near the residence or just simply stopped.

From there the suspect, still on foot, was picked up by a passerby and taken to Maverik in Tremonton.

With description of the suspect, a broadcast was sent out and at approximately 5:50 a.m. a man fitting the description was spotted at that Maverik in Tremonton. Officers were able to detain the suspect.

Jerimia Joesiah Hawthorne, 19, of Salt Lake City, was arrested and booked into the Box Elder County Jail for multiple charges that include a warrant for Failure to Appear in First District Court, Aggravated Assault and Obstruction of Justice.

The Box Elder Sheriff’s Department, Utah Highway Patrol and the Tremonton/Garland Police Department all assisted in this incident.
