Authorities have arrested Edwy Jimenez, 37, of Garland on DUI charges after Jimenez was reportedly driving recklessly on 4400 W. in East Garland and crashed into a canal.

On Saturday, July 18, at approximately 7:45 p.m., the Box Elder Sheriff’s Office, first responders and other agencies responded to the accident where Jimenez’s 1981 Cadillac Coupe was completely submerged in the canal.

According to the Box Elder Sheriff’s Office, Jimenez was able to “extricate himself from the vehicle and swim to safety. It was reported that he had a few bumps, bruises and minor scrapes but no significant injury.”

Authorities closed the road near 13400 N. 4400 W. (East Garland Road), for several hours as they attempted to retrieve the vehicle from the canal.

The Box Elder County Scuba and Recovery team was called in and two divers were sent into the canal to hook up the vehicle for wreckers to pull the car out of the canal. With the help of the Garland Fire Department, Utah Division of Natural Resources, Tremonton EMS, Bear River Health Department and the Bear River Canal Company, the vehicle was removed from the canal as agencies monitored the scene for potential significant hazardous spillage in the water.

“This has been a very busy weekend for Box Elder Sheriff’s Deputies and volunteer groups. There have been several recreational vehicle accidents reported over the weekend, some of them requiring search and rescue teams to aid and transport injured individuals,” stated the Box Elder Sheriff’s Office.

“As people continue to seek outdoor activities in the midst of the COVID pandemic, Box Elder Sheriff urges good safety practices. As you venture into the outdoors, please let someone know where you are going, when to expect you back and don’t deviate from those plans without notifying someone. Sheriff’s Office and search and rescue teams need to know where to start looking for you if the need arises,” the statement added.
