NEWS - Bridge closed following inspection

The bridge crossing the Bear River Canal at 8000 N and SR 13, in Elwood, is closed for the time being as Utah Department of Transportation crews test its structural soundness.

Gordon Young with Box Elder County Road Department said UDOT does inspections on all the bridges throughout the county about every four years.

“They found this one was on the verge of failure,” Young said. “With as many school buses that cross over it, they didn’t want to take a chance. They had their representatives close it for the weekend. The main inspectors are here today (November 15) to give it a final check.”

That check will determine if the bridge should be demolished and replaced or if it is strong enough to go another year.
