BOX ELDER COUNTY - March 28, 2023

A five-vehicle crash on I-15 Monday, March 27, caused the death of three out-of-state travelers and closed down the northbound freeway lanes for more than five hours.

A report from Utah Highway Patrol stated the accident occurred around noon at milepost 352, as crews were clearing a earlier crash that has resulted in a jack-knifed semi. Traffic had slowed in the area, but the driver of a semi-truck and trailer, Bogdan Jutrznia, 63, of Ontario, Canada, failed to recognize the slower vehicles and struck the back of a Ford passenger car in front of him. That vehicle was driven by Lewis H. Tarrant, 76, from Seattle, Washington. Eileen C. Riordan, 72, also of Seattle, was a passenger.

The impact sent the Ford into a Nissan van, pushing it off the left side of the road. The Ford then continued and struck the trailer of the semi that had initially hit them.

That semi continued to travel north, crashing into the trailer of a second semi pulling doubles. The force pushed the trailer into the next lane where it hit a third semi and trailer.

Jutrznia died as a result of the crash, as did Tarrant and Riordan. All other involved received minor injuries and were not transported.
