BOX ELDER COUNTY – By Cari Doutre – September 10, 2020
Despite news that Box Elder County will move into the Green Phase starting September 11, 2020, masks are still required at all schools in the entire state, as per State Public Health Order UPHO-11 (attached below).
Utah Governor Gary Herbert announced on Thursday, September 10, that Box Elder County will be moving to the Green Phase, the state’s minimal level of COVID-19 (coronavirus) restrictions, starting Friday, September 11.
Steven Carlsen, Box Elder School District Superintendent, released the following statement on September 10.
“Today Governor Herbert held another update press conference on the COVID-19 pandemic. In his update he declared Box Elder County 'green.' I do not know exactly what that means for the rest of the county businesses or public entities. I only know that public schools are still under the same mask mandate as before,” Carlsen wrote in an email to parents.
“As public school districts, we have been told this is the order that we must follow until this order is changed. I spoke with Utah Superintendent of Public Schools yesterday (Wednesday, September 9, 2020) and she made it very clear that this order was for public schools specifically,” Carlsen added.
Utah moved to the Yellow Phase (low risk) on May 16. The move from Orange Phase (moderate risk) to Yellow Phase was made after the state determined “Utah’s efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 have been working,” stated the Utah Department of Health's website.
“Finding a new normal won’t be instant, like flipping a switch, it’ll be more like gradually moving a dial,” it added.
