BOX ELDER COUNTY - September 7, 2021

A 35-year-old Layton man was tased by law enforcement after combating with officers on I-84 west of Tremonton, Tuesday morning, September 7.

Information from Utah Highway Patrol said numerous 911 calls came in to Box Elder County Dispatch around 11:30 a.m., about a male subject running in traffic near milepost 18. Some of the callers stated the man was acting strangely and even violently, nearly causing several accidents. He was also taking off his clothes.

A UHP trooper, along with a Box Elder County deputy and a Tremonton police officer responded to the scene. The male ran from the officers but was captured near milepost 17. A struggle ensued and the subject broke free and ran to a car stopped nearby in the emergency lane. He attempted to enter the car occupied by an elderly couple.

Law enforcement again tried to control the man who continued to resist. A taser was then deployed more than once and the officers were able to take the subject into custody about milepost 16.

Medical personnel transported the man to an area hospital, where he was then loaded into a medical helicopter and flown to a Salt Lake City hospital.
