DEWEYVILLE - April 9, 2023

A Nibley woman is in critical condition following an early morning train versus car accident at the tracks on Highway 102 in Deweyville on Sunday, April 9.

According to information from the Tremonton Fire Department, the accident occurred about 2 a.m. Crews from Central Box Elder Fire District and the Tremonton department arrived to find a vehicle had hit a slow-moving railcar loaded with sulfuric acid.

The 32-year-old driver and sole occupant of the car was trapped inside and had to extricated. She was transported to Bear River Valley Hospital and later flown by medical helicopter to McKay-Dee Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to Tremonton Fire Chief Chris Scothern, the coordination between Dispatch, Utah Highway Patrol, Tremonton Garland Police and emergency personnel was vital in taking care of the situation. "Fire and EMS crews did an amazing job to quickly extricate, treat and get the patient to a higher level of care. We also inspected the railcar at where the vehicle made impact to ensure there was no health or environmental impact."

UHP is investigating the accident.
