A controlled burn along a ditch bank near Skyway Golf Course in Tremonton changed direction Tuesday afternoon, March 22, blackening about two acres of a nearby field and causing damage for at least one home owner.

Tremonton Fire Chief Robert LaCroix said golf course personnel were getting rid of weeds along the ditch bank about 2:30 p.m., when a wind gust send the fire westward.

Three fire engines were sent to battle the quick moving blaze, and crews soon had it under control, but not before it took out about 50 feet of vinyl fencing at a home along 1500 West. The fire was contained about 4:30 p.m.

LaCroix cautions those who burn to watch the weather and be especially cautious when the wind is blowing. "And it's always blowing in Tremonton," he added.

"This is the second fire of this sort in four days," he said, noting that crews battled a similar two-acre debris burn in Deweyville on Saturday that got out of control.
