SCHOOL - "Ashley Roberts named 2020 Female Scholastic Athlete of the Year"

Publisher’s note: The Bear River High School Class of 2020 didn’t get the traditional senior awards ceremony that other graduating classes before them had.

The world-wide COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic that closed all public schools in Utah on March 16, 2020 meant high schools needed to find an alternative way to celebrate graduating seniors.

Bear River High administrators opted to do a surprise home visit for the four graduating seniors receiving the 2020 student athletes of the year awards. Working closely with parents to plan it all, administrators and coaches from Bear River High were able to honor these students in a way that meets social distancing guidelines.

Bear River Live and The Valley Headliner – BRVNEWS.com were both invited to capture those surprise moments and the award ceremonies.

Bear River Live produced videos for each of the four students and The Valley Headliner – BRVNEWS.com provided originally written articles and pictures for each of the students.

Ashley Roberts exemplifies what it means to be a student athlete at Bear River High School. While maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout her entire high school career, Ashley also managed to become a three-sport athlete and make a difference in her community.

This year Ashley, a senior at Bear River High, was named the 2020 Female Scholastic Athlete of the Year. However, Ashley didn’t get the opportunity to receive her award in front of an audience of her friends, family members and others due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) restrictions.

Instead, Ashley got surprised at her home by a group of administrators and coaches from Bear River High on May 13. Ashley’s parents, Colby and Lori, were in on the surprise and coordinated it all with the school.

“Of all her accomplishments, probably the most meaningful and long lasting is her kindness to her teammates, classmates, coaches, teachers and everyone she comes in contact with,” said Bear River High’s Athletic Director Van Park during the award ceremony.

Other coaches that have had the opportunity to coach Ashley also praised her.

“Miss Roberts is one of the most talented student athletes I have ever worked with,” said Bear River High head girls’ basketball coach Tyrell Neal. “She works hard in the classroom and on the court and field. She has excelled in all areas of her life.”

“Above all, however, is her outstanding ability to be a good teammate, a loyal friend and a team leader. Those skills will help her be successful in whichever direction she chooses to head to in the future,” Neal added.
