SPORTS – “Bear River High boys’ tennis begins the 2021 season in stride”

Starting off the 2021 high school boys’ tennis season for Bear River High meant an annual trip to St. George in southern Utah where the Bears faced five teams in two days.

The Bears started with a team loss of 5-0 to Morgan High School and followed that up with a loss to Northridge High School, 3-2.

The following day, Bear River High started out with a strong 5-0 win over South Sevier High School. While Grantsville High School narrowly beat the Bears 3-2, after that, the Bears were able to finish the tournament strong with a 5-0 win over Stansbury High School.

Individually, Ammon Hunter took second place competing in the second singles division. At first doubles, McCade Cefalo and Wyatt Zollinger finished in third place and at second doubles Kayson John and Justin Staheli took fourth.

Spencer Duncan (first singles) and Reed Bourgeous (third singles) both finished the tournament in fourth place.

Overall, Bear River High tied for third in the eight-team bracket.

Following up that tournament, the Bear River High boys’ tennis hosted Sky View High School on March 23, for a 3-2 win over the Bobcats – their first region win since 2017, according to Ken Oxborrow, head coach of the boys’ tennis team at Bear River High.

Hunter defeated his opponent 6-3, 7-6, at second singles. The Bears first doubles team (Cefalo and Zollinger), won 6-3, 6-4. John and Stahli at second doubles also earned the win 6-4, 6-2.

Short a few varsity players and moving the match up a day against Mountain Crest High School, the Bears traveled to the Mustangs’ home court on March 24. The Bears took home a 5-0 loss to the Mustangs in Region 11 action.

Next up for the Bear River High boys’ tennis team is a trip to Logan High School on Tuesday, March 30, for another region meet.
