SPORTS – “Boys’ and girls’ wrestling at Bear River crowned Division B champions”

The Bear River High boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams competed at Ridgeline High last weekend at the Division B tournament that determines the seeding for the 4A state tournament this Friday and Saturday, February 18-19, in Richfield.

On the boys’ side, the Bears finished in first place with 405 points ahead of Ridgeline with 371. The Bears were able to qualify 24 wrestlers for state. Bear River put eight wrestlers into the finals and in three of the matches it was a Bear River vs Bear River matchup and crowned four champions.


Division B champions included:

· Daxton Bingham (106)

· Kayden Ward (113)

· Zach Gunderson (144)

· River Smith (175)


The following wrestlers also placed at the Division B championships:

  • 2nd place: Keaton Smith (106), Max Miller (113), Kwade Kosoff (175) and Kaeson Burn (190)

  • 3rd place: Ty Hawkes (126), Dustin Douglas (150), and Kyle Detwiler (157)

  • 4th place: Tyson Hirschi (132) and Braegger Richards (138)

  • 5th place: Chet Kunzler (126), Vincent Fertig (150), Skyler Yeates (165), Gattlynn Freeze (215), and Carson Pond (285)

  • 6th place: Zeb Mitchell (132), and Jarom Nelson (144)

  • 7th place: KC Tisher (157), Jared Jones (165), and Max Anderson (215)

  • 8th place: Daxtin Gines (138)


The Bears also had three wrestlers that ended up in the alternate position finishing in 9th Waylon White (120), Aiden Wilson (190) and Jaden Decoursey (285) and Gunner Christensen took 10th place individually.


On the girls’ side, it was a lopsided victory for the Lady Bears as they racked up 487 points ahead of the next closest team Ridgeline with 198 points.


Bear River put 15 wrestlers into the finals and crowned the following champions:

· Bella Gunderson (115)

· Tassie Hatch (120)

· Hailey Branch (130)

· Josie Redman (140)

· Rhees Hatch (145)

· Haylee Farnsworth (170)

· Bretlee Potter (190)

· Shanna Archuleta (235)


Also earning a spot at the 4A state tournament includes:

  • 2nd place: Kate Bunce (110), Samara Ward (115), Sophia Miller (120), Avery Cazzell (125), Emma Peterson (135) and Sydnee Nielson (190)

  • 3rd place: Rachel Epling (110), Makynlie Nelson (125), Rachel Nelson (135), Eve Allsop (155), and Rylie Smith (235)

  • 4th place: Emalee Farnsworth (145), and Crislyn Potter (155)

  • 5th place: Addy Doutre (130)

  • 7th place: Lillie Peterson (170)
