BEAR RIVER HIGH - By Tate Atkin, Headliner Sports Editor, March 21, 2023

The Bear River High girls' lacrosse team started the 2023 season with hopes of replicating last year's success. The 2022 season could not have been better for the Lady Bears as they were able to complete the perfect season, going undefeated and finishing the year as the 4A state champions.

The Bears return plenty of key players from last year's championship team and hope that their veteran leadership, along with new talent, will give them what it takes to repeat as champions and bring home another state championship trophy.

On March 15, Bear River hosted Fremont High to officially kick off the 2023 season. The Bears picked up where they left off last season scoring 11 points in the first half while holding the Silverwolves to just one goal. Bear River extended their lead in the second half and added another game to their win streak by beating Fremont, 18-3.

Senior Marley Kierstead scored four goals and scooped up three ground balls. Senior Jenna LaCroix scored two goals and added three assists and a team high of 11 ground balls. Sophomore Shelby Wilkinson scored four goals to go along with two assists and five ground balls and sophomore Saydee Pebley had a great game as goalkeeper only allowing three goals in 40 minutes played.

They say that all good things must come to an end and unfortunately the Lady Bears' winning streak dating back to last season has sadly ended.

Bear River hosted 6A's Corner Canyon High on March 17, and it seemed that the Chargers had the luck of the Irish with them as they upset the high-powered Bear River Bears. It was a defensive battle throughout, but Bear River fell just short as they lost to the Chargers, 7-5.

The Bear River High girls' lacrosse team will now look to start another win streak as they traveled to take on West Jordan High on March 21, before returning home to face Waterford High on March 22.
