BEAR RIVER HIGH – By Justus Wise, Headliner Sports Writer, April 29, 2022

Our Lady Bears have been busy beating opponents left and right on the softball field but were we ever expecting anything less?

Though the Bear River High softball team remain undefeated against region opponents, they ended their 10-game winning streak against Spanish Fork High (5A), who are ranked within the top five of teams in the entire state of Utah. More about that game later…

Facing off against their Region 11 opponents on April 19, the Ridgeline High Riverhawks, proved an easy feat for the Lady Bears although they did not fail to keep things interesting. On the Riverhawks’ home field, the Bears were down for most of the game scoring only two runs compared to the Ridgeline’s four.

It wasn’t until the fifth inning that the Bears really came into their own following a walk-off score by freshman sensation Aubree Fry and a double that sent two runners home by senior Haylee “Bob” Farnsworth.

It was all downhill from there for the Riverhawks as the Bears scored five more runs ending the game with 10 runs compared to Ridgeline’s five.

The Lady Bears then took down the Farmington High Phoenix on April 20, at Bear River High. Bear River started the game off with two runs in the second initiated by a double from senior McCall Maxfield that sent senior Carlee Miller home as well as a single from senior Kinley Toone that sent freshman Bella Douglas home.

Unperturbed as they might have been, the Phoenix could not hang in the third scoring only two runs compared to our Bears three. They refused to take the foot off the pedal and scored two more runs and ended the game ahead of the Phoenix, 7-3.

The Bears felt that a batting lesson was for their April 22, game and so they decided to host the Mountain Crest High Mustangs and they were not disappointed.

The Bears began with a light warm up, so they scored seven runs in the first three innings holding the Mustangs to only three runs, all of which were scored in the third inning. These would be the only runs Mountain Crest scored for the rest of the game while Bear River decided to cap it off with an even 12 runs beating the Mustangs heartily, 12-3.

Our Bears readied themselves for a real challenge as they hosted one of the toughest teams in the state, the Spanish Fork High Dons. Hosting Spanish Fork on April 25, the game remained scoreless, with junior Kate Dahle leading the defense from the pitcher’s circle until the fourth inning when Spanish Fork scored off a single.

The Bears would give up one more run in the fifth but would hold the Dons scoreless for the rest of the game. Despite an incredible defensive effort by Bear River, it could not make anything happen offensively and they would lose the game, 2-0.

The Lady Bears returned to region play after that hosting Logan High on April 26, for a 15-0 win over the Grizzlies. Senior Zoe Sorensen went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and a double and Farnsworth hit a home run.

Following up that game with a non-region matchup against Herriman High on April 27, the Bears squeaked by with a close 7-6 win. Miller went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a triple. Maxfield hit two doubles and once again, Farnsworth put one over the fence with her second home run of the week.

Up next for the Bear River High softball team is a Region 11 game against Green Canyon High on Friday, April 29.
