As the end of the Region 12 swim season came to a close on Saturday, Jan. 30, the Bear River High School swim team struggled in the water against powerhouse schools in a tough region lineup.
Bear River High senior Madyson Mickelsen was the Bears’ top placer during Saturday’s region championship meet hosted by Mountain Crest High School. She took second place in the girls’ 100m backstroke event with a time of 1:05.31.
Mickelsen also finished in fifth place in the 200m free at 2:08.81.

Younger sister Morgan Mickelsen, a junior at Bear River High, took ninth place in the 100m breaststroke event (1:20.45) and 10th place in the 200m IM (2:33.20).
Finishing in the top 10 for the Lady Bears was Shannon Hyer. She took ninth place in the 50m free (28:43) and 10th place in the 100m fly (1:09.23).
Jefferson Kowallis, a senior at Bear River High, took fourth place in the region championship meet in the boys’ 100m breaststroke event with a time of 1:04.77. Close behind in fifth place in that same race was Bear River’s Keegan Hadley at 1:06.78.
Also finishing in the top 10 for the Bear River boys’ swim team includes Kelton Marshall, who took seventh place in the 50m free (25.06). Kowallis took seventh in the 200m IM at 2:14.40 and Hadley took eighth in the 100m fly at 1:03.47. Ethan Griffin took 10th place in the 500m free (5:44.34) and Keegan Gibbs finished 10th in the 100m backstroke at 1:04.99.
Both the boys’ and the girls’ swim teams from Bear River High finished in sixth place overall in Region 12.
Up next is the 4A state championship meet on Feb. 12-13, at Brigham Young University in Provo.
