SPORTS - "Rheagan Hartfiel places 3rd in girls' high school golf"

SALT LAKE CITY – By Cari Doutre – June 8, 2020

When the Utah High School Activities Association cancelled all spring 2020 high school sports and activities due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) concerns, the Utah Section PGA stepped up and gave Utah high school girls’ golf closure to an abruptly ended season.

On Thursday, June 4, high school golfers in the 1A-4A girls’ classification gathered at Rose Park Golf Course in Salt Lake City for 18 rounds of competitive golf. No coaches and little to no spectators were allowed on the golf course to ensure social distancing guidelines were met.

Six Lady Bears from the Bear River High girls’ golf team headed down to the tournament with newly graduated Class of 2020’s Rheagan Hartfiel taking third overall in the Spring Individual Championship.

Hartfiel shot a 76, six strokes behind Dixie High School’s Annabelle Millard. Millard shot a 70 for first place in the tournament followed by Desert Hills High School’s Abigail Leitze with a 75.

“Placing in the top three this year was very exciting,” said Hartfiel. “I had been working really hard all summer. My goal for this golf season was to place in the top five and I made it!”

While it wasn’t the official UHSAA 4A state tournament, Hartfiel was just happy to get out on the competitive course again.

“I’m very happy that the PGA put this final tournament together, especially for us seniors who didn’t get a season,” she added.

“I was able to finish off my last high school golf tournament with a bang and didn’t have any regrets,” Hartfiel said.
