The Bears are back on the high school wrestling mat for the official start of the 2020-21 season on Dec. 30, at Weber High School – and did so with two big team wins in non-region play.

After a COVID-19 outbreak earlier this month delayed the start of the wrestling season for Bear River High School wrestlers, the boys’ wrestling team were cleared to compete and took on Weber High for their first competition of the season.

Back on the mat his senior year is Trenton Ward, a returning a 4A state wrestling champion from the 2019-20 season. Ward jumped up a weight class to 113 this year but didn’t have a Weber opponent willing to take him on in the varsity meet and won via forfeit.

Six Bears had pins against Weber in the varsity meet that included Kayden Ward (106), Caleb Korth (126), River Smith (152), Cael Wilcox (160), Kaeson Burn (182) and Braxton Christensen (220).

At 170 Landon Cabral for Bear River beat his opponent 10-8 while Ty Hawkes (120) and Dilon Wright (132) earned wins via forfeit. The Bears earned the team win 57-17.

On the junior varsity mat for the pin for Bear River includes Max Miller (113), Kaaola Southwick (126), Kyle Detwiler (145), Israel Varela (152), Brendon Wolfe (160), Ruger Smith (182) and Xander Lish (220). Josh Shaw (132), Braegger Richards (138) and Kwade Kosoff (170) won via forfeit. The Bears had the junior varsity team win, 60-6.

Up next for the Bears is the Syracuse Scuffle on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021 at Syracuse High School.

As a quick reminder, due to COVID-19 guidelines and restrictions, the Utah High School Activities Association will only permit two family members per wrestler at live matches or meets. Other spectators, including students, will not be permitted.

However, Bear River Live will livestream several wrestling meets this season. For a full schedule visit them at www.brlivestream.com
