Two trips to Box Elder High School and one to Green Canyon High School last week kept the Bear River High boys’ wrestling team busy with some tough competition on the mat.

The annual Richardson Memorial wrestling tournament at Box Elder High School is traditionally one of the toughest tournaments of the year for high school wrestling. This year proved that to be just as true as previous years, especially for the Bear River High boys’ wrestling team.

Held Jan. 8-9, in Brigham City, the junior varsity wrestling team from Bear River High fared better than the varsity team taking second place overall with 186 points behind Mountain Crest High School. The Bears had two wrestlers take first individually.

Sophomore Max Miller (106) and freshman Ty Hawkes (120) topped the podium in their weight divisions for the Bears pinning their opponents (both from Mountain Crest High) in the finals. Finishing the tournament in second place included Dustin Douglas (145) and Kwade Kosoff (160).

Overall, the junior varsity team had seven wrestlers on the podium taking sixth place or higher.

On the varsity side of competition, and his first year attending Bear River High, Landon Cabral took first at 170 after pinning Caleb Marx from Box Elder High in the finals. Cabral was the only varsity Bear River wrestler that made it into the finals.

Senior Cael Wilcox (160) and junior Kaeson Burn (182) both finished in third place. Senior Braxton Christensen (220) and junior Kayden Ward (106) both finished in sixth place to make the podium for Bear River High.

The Bear River High varsity team took sixth overall with 105 points. Box Elder High, Payson High and Mountain Crest High took the top three spots at the tournament.

Coming home with a victory that night for the varsity Bear River High team included:

Dustin Douglas (145)

River Smith (152)

Cael Wilcox (160)

Landon Cabral (170)

Kaeson Burn (182)

Braxton Christensen (220)

Kayden Ward (106)

Beginning the week for the Bears was a non-region meet against cross-county rivals Box Elder High on Jan. 6, where the Bear River High suffered a hard loss to the Bees, 58-18.

Three Bears earned a victory that night – Dilon Wright (126), Cael Wilcox (160) and Kaeson Burn (170). All three pinned their Box Elder High opponents.
