ST. GEORGE – By Cari Doutre – March 15, 2020
The start of the 2020 girls’ high school golf season for the Lady Bears at Bear River High, proved that there are only two factors that will stall their season – a pandemic virus and rain.
Even before the Utah High School Activities Association announced that all high school sports in Utah were suspended for two weeks (a precaution to help prevent the spreading of COVID-19, or coronavirus) the Bear River girls’ golf team still managed to get time on the golf course.
Starting with a pre-season Region 12 tournament at Remuda Golf Course in Farr West on Monday, March 9, the Bears finished in first place - narrowly beating Ridgeline High by one.
Coming in first individually for the Bears was senior Brook Stevenson. She shot a 40, which was good enough for first place individually. Senior Rheagan Hartfiel was close behind and shot a 41 at Remuda Golf Course.
Not far behind was senior Macy Newman and junior Morgan Rose, both shot a 45 for the Bears. Senior Makensy Thompson finished the day shooting a 49 and junior Kelby Jensen shot a 57. Bear River’s Kaydence Olsen and Hattie Firth both shot a 62 that afternoon.
“We looked really good,” Bear River girls’ golf team head coach Jim Thomas said.
Next up the team took to the road to sunny southern Utah for a three-day tournament but Mother Nature had plans of her own.
All high school girls’ golf teams were able to take the course on Thursday, March 12, at Sky Mountain Golf Course in Hurricane. Story continues below...

“The girls played pretty well, and we ended up finishing in first place for the weekend,” said Thomas.
“I’m way excited about this team. We have four seniors that have been to the state tournament the past three years and two juniors that have a lot of experience. We have some big goals for the season. We also had a lot of younger girls tryout this year. We ended up with 20 girls on the team this year, so that is exciting for our future,” Thomas added.
Further details on when the Bears play next will be updated at BRVNEWS.com and on Facebook when they become available.
