Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded to multiple calls of an erratic driver on SR 13 traveling southbound near Elwood City on Friday, December 31, at about 11 a.m. According to Sgt. Arik Beesley with UHP, those reports said the vehicle, a Tahoe registered out of Tremonton, could not maintain proper lane travel, was driving into oncoming traffic and had almost caused several accidents.

A trooper responded and attempted to stop the suspect in Bear River City. As he approached the Tahoe, the driver took off southbound. More officers joined the short pursuit, which ended near Corinne when the trooper did a pit maneuver, sending the vehicle into a ditch.

The driver, a male in his 40s, refused to exit the vehicle and officers had to physically extract him. As they attempted to take him into custody, he continued to resist arrest and had to be strapped to a gurney. He was transported to Brigham City Community Hospital for examination and is being investigated for driving while impaired.

Beesley cautioned those who plan to celebrate with alcohol this New Year’s Eve to think before they get behind the wheel. “With the weather conditions we are expecting, having any alcohol in your system is just going to make things worse. There does not need to be another factor in the mix that might cause injury or death. Please don’t drink and drive. Stay home and have your party.”
