A single vehicle accident along I-15 southbound near Brigham City killed two people and left another in critical condition. The accident occurred near mile marker 365 just after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25, 2021.

According to Utah Highway Patrol, the driver of the vehicle swerved to avoid a tire tread on the road and lost control causing the vehicle to exit the freeway on the west side where it hit a pole. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.

The driver of the vehicle, a male, was killed in the accident. A female passenger in the front seat was taken to a hospital by medical helicopter in critical condition where she later died. One passenger in the backseat was also airlifted from the scene and taken to the hospital with critical injuries.

Names of those involved in the accident have not been released.

Traffic along 1-15 southbound was diverted at exit 372 in Honeyville. Vehicles were at a standstill with traffic backing up as far as Elwood, just south of Tremonton. An additional accident was reported near the Bear River bottoms due to congestion on the freeway.

The southbound lanes near the scene of the accident were temporarily closed for emergency responders and clean-up efforts. The scene, and subsequent traffic, has been cleared.
