NEWS - "Inmate death under investigation"

Updated: Mar 3, 2022

BOX ELDER COUNTY - February 28, 2022

The death of a Box Elder County Jail inmate on Monday morning, February 28, is under examination by the Northern Utah Critical Investigation Team, a unit independent of the Sheriff’s Department.

A preliminary investigation indicated that Jed Collatz, 49, died of suicide. He was discovered to be in cardiac arrest during a safety and security check by jail deputies about 11:15 a.m. He was alone in a locked cell.

Deputies and medical state immediately provided emergency care and Brigham City Emergency Medical Services responded to assist. Resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.

Collatz had been in the jail awaiting bail or a court hearing since his arrest by sheriff deputies on Saturday, February 26, for aggravated assault and criminal mischief. A Probable Cause Statement had been signed by a judge.

In a release regarding the incident, newly appointed Chief Deputy Sheriff Cade Palmer offered sympathy from the department. “We express our sincere condolences to Mr. Collatz’s family during this difficult time,” it read.
