GARLAND – By Cari Doutre – June 3, 2020
At Garland Elementary School during the 2019-2020 school year, a new face roamed the halls, interacted with students and staff while bringing positivity and support to all. Those efforts have earned Marcia Wilson, Garland Elementary school counselor, the title and award for “Rookie of the Year” from the Utah School Counselor Association.
Nominated by those Wilson works with at the school and in Box Elder School District, she was presented the award by representatives from the Utah School Counselor Association on Friday, May 29. This is a statewide recognition.

Wilson was surprised that day with the award, unaware that she had been nominated. She was presented with a plaque, balloons, free admission to an upcoming conference and, best of all, lunch from the Grille in Tremonton.
“She was chosen because she is awesome. She is patient, kind and enthusiastic. She connects with our students in amazing ways and helps so many of them to be successful in school,” said Garland Elementary School Principal Mark Johnson.

Wilson also organized Kindness Week at the school. For that full story see The Valley Headliner – BRVNEWS.com’s article by clicking on the link below.
“She teaches our students a curriculum on how to deal with stress and challenges. She has created a character education program at our school and she supports our teachers in many ways. She is only a second-year counselor but she seems like she has been doing this forever. We love having her at Garland,” added Johnson.
