BEAR RIVER HIGH - By Tate Atkin, Headliner Sports Editor, August 22, 2022

The academic school year at Bear River High is fast approaching, but the athletic year is already well under way for the 2022 Bear River High girls' soccer season that started earlier this month. The Lady Bears have already competed in six games on the season and will now enjoy a small break as they prepare for the school year to start before beginning Region 12 play starting August 31.

The girls' soccer season kicked off on August 4, as the Bears traveled to Ogden to face the St. Joseph High Jayhawks. In the first period the Bears scored one goal and held the Jayhawks scoreless behind great defense including great goal play from sophomore goalie Brooklynn Pond. The second half was dominated by the Bears as they allowed just one goal while scoring three of their own. The final score saw the Bears defeating the Jayhawks, 4-1, with senior Bentley Lorimer and sophomore Janessa Esquivel each scoring two goals for the Bears' big win.

Two days later on August 6, the Bears hosted their first home game of the season against the Hurricane High Tigers. It was a close battle throughout with J. Esquivel following up her two-goal game with another two goals yet again. It wasn't quite enough to secure the victory as the Bears fell to the Tigers, 3-2.

Bear River was once again on their home turf as they hosted the Tooele High Buffalos on August 9. The Bears' defense dominated over Tooele shutting the Buffaloes down, 2-0. Scoring for the Bears' that game came included senior Katrina Esquivel with an assist from sophomore Livia Meeds in the first half of the game. In the second half of the game, junior Chloe Woodward scored with an assist by K. Esquivel.

The Bears next game was on the road again as they traveled to Ogden on August 12, to face off against the Ben Lomond High Scots. It was a strong defensive battle as the Bears' defense held the Scots to just one goal. Sophomore Gracie Meeds and junior Chloe Cammack each scored a goal as they propelled the Bears past Ben Lomond for the win, 2-1.

Bear River then took their two-game winning streak with them when they faced Morgan High on August 16. It was a back-and-forth game with plenty of action on the scoreboard. The Bears ultimately came up short losing to the Trojans, 3-2.

Hoping to get back on their winning track, the Bears hosted longtime county rival the Box Elder Bees on August 18. The Bees came into the game with a high-powered scoring offense and with the Bears' strong defense with Pond protecting the net they were able to keep the Bees in check allowing just two goals. Offensively the Bears put one lone goal on the scoreboard coming from G. Meeds, assisted by Cammack. The Bear's came up just short to the Bees from Box Elder High as they lost, 2-1.
